Can we all just take a collective, deep, rib-expanding breath for a second?
If you’re anything like me: and the rest of the crew here at Byrnes Counseling Group: your shoulders have probably been living somewhere up near your earlobes for the last couple of months. Every time the Florida Legislature gavels back into session, it feels like the entire LGBTQ+ community in the Sunshine State collectively holds its breath. We brace ourselves for the headlines, the vitriol, and the "what-ifs" that keep us up at 2:00 AM.
But here’s the good news: The 2026 regular session has officially wrapped up. And while it wasn't a perfect season by any means, there are some massive, tangible reasons to exhale. Specifically, two of the most concerning bills targeting our community didn't make it across the finish line.
As a trans man and a therapist who lives and works right here in the heart of this community, I want to talk about why this is a win, why you might still feel "off" even though the "threat" has paused, and how we move forward from here.
The Bills That Didn't Make the Cut
Let’s get straight to the "wins." In the world of Florida politics lately, a "win" often looks like a bad bill simply running out of time. This year, we saw two particularly nasty pieces of legislation stall out, and honestly, we should be celebrating that.
1. The 'Trans at Work' Bill
This bill was designed to make the workplace a a lot more hostile for trans and non-binary folks. It aimed to restrict how we show up professionally: from pronouns to bathroom access to basic workplace protections. The goal was clearly to make it so uncomfortable to be out at work that people would either go back into the closet or leave their jobs entirely.
The outcome: It didn't pass.
What does this mean for you? It means that for now, the legal landscape regarding your right to exist as yourself at work hasn't been upended by this specific threat. You can walk into your office, your job site, or your retail shift tomorrow knowing that this particular hurdle was cleared. It’s a win for dignity, and it’s a win for our right to make a living without state-sanctioned harassment.
2. The 'Minor Doctor Sue' Bill
This one was particularly insidious. It sought to extend the statute of limitations to an unheard-of length of time, allowing individuals to sue doctors who provided gender-affirming care to minors years: even decades: after the fact. The point wasn't actually about "protecting" anyone; it was about terrifying doctors into stopping care altogether. It was an intimidation tactic aimed at the medical professionals who support our trans youth.
The outcome: It also failed to pass.
This is huge. It means the providers who are out there doing the brave work of supporting trans kids and their families don't have this massive, looming legal target on their backs for the foreseeable future. Keeping our healthcare infrastructure intact is vital for the survival of our community.

Why Do I Still Feel Like I’m Under Attack?
Even with these bills failing, you might find yourself feeling exhausted, jumpy, or even a little "down." I see this all the time in my office. People say, "Tristan, the session is over, the bad bills died, why am I still crying in my car?"
The answer is simple: Legislative Trauma.
Even when a bill doesn't become law, the process of it being debated is a form of psychological warfare. You’ve spent months hearing people in positions of power talk about your identity as if it’s a problem to be solved or a "contagion" to be contained. That takes a toll on your nervous system.
We’ve talked before about hypervigilance as a form of protection, and that is exactly what many of us are experiencing right now. Your brain has been in "threat-detection mode" for months. It doesn't just switch off the second the gavel hits the desk.
If you’re feeling a bit raw, give yourself some grace. You’ve been through a lot. The "noise" of the session is loud, and it’s okay if it takes a while for your internal environment to get quiet again. For a deeper dive into how to manage this specific type of stress, check out our previous post on navigating the noise.
The Power of Resilience (And a Little Humor)
One of the things I love most about the LGBTQ+ community in Florida is our sheer stubbornness. They keep trying to build walls, and we just keep bringing more glitter and sledgehammers.
I joke around in sessions sometimes that being trans in Florida is basically a full-time job that doesn't pay well and has terrible benefits. But the "payoff" is the community we build in the margins. We have become experts at finding joy in the middle of a thunderstorm.
The fact that these bills failed is a testament to the advocates, the protesters, the letter-writers, and every single one of you who just kept living your life authentically. Your existence is a form of resistance.

Focusing on What You Can Control
In therapy, we often look at the "Circle of Control." The Florida Legislature is, unfortunately, in the "Things I Cannot Control" category (at least until election day). However, how you care for yourself in the aftermath is entirely within your circle.
Now that the immediate threat of these bills has passed for the year, it’s time to shift your focus back to you.
- Log off: If you’ve been doom-scrolling Tallahassee news, delete the apps for a week. The updates can wait.
- Connect: Reach out to your people. There is medicine in being around folks who "get it" without you having to explain a thing. We are big believers in the power of us.
- Find Euphoria: Shift your focus from "surviving" to "thriving." What makes you feel good in your skin? Is it a new haircut? A hike? A night out with friends? Go do that. If you need some ideas, we literally made a Gender Euphoria Checklist for this exact reason.
A Note on the "What's Next"
I want to be real with you: because I don't do "toxic positivity." The research shows that while the regular session is over, there are special sessions scheduled for April to handle the budget. We also know that some DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) restrictions did pass at a local government level.
The fight isn't over, and the landscape is still challenging. But: and this is a big "but": we have to celebrate the gaps in the clouds when we see them. If we wait for the world to be perfect before we allow ourselves to feel relief, we’ll be waiting forever.
The failure of the 'Trans at Work' and 'Minor Doctor Sue' bills is a gap in the clouds. Lean into that light today.

If you’re struggling to decompress after this session, or if the "headline stress" has triggered some older traumas, you don’t have to process that alone. Whether you're looking for EMDR therapy to deal with the hypervigilance or just need an affirming space to talk about navigating your identity, we’ve got you.
Our team of therapists is specifically trained to work with the LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent communities. We know the specific flavor of stress that comes with living in Florida right now, and we’re here to help you find your footing again.
Final Thoughts: Take That Breath
Seriously. Do it right now. In through the nose, out through the mouth.
The session is over. The worst-case scenarios for those specific bills didn't happen. You are still here. We are still here. And there is a whole lot of life left to live that has nothing to do with what happens in a tall building in Tallahassee.
If you’re ready to stop "bracing" and start healing, feel free to reach out to us. Let's talk about how to get you feeling like yourself again.
Stay resilient, stay hydrated, and most importantly, stay you.
