Let’s be real for a second: being an ally in Florida right now feels a bit like trying to hold an umbrella in a hurricane. Between the legislative "dumpster fires" at the state level and the constant headlines targeting our community, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

As a trans-identified therapist and the founder of Byrnes Counseling Group, I see the weight of this climate every day in my office. I see it in the eyes of my clients who are navigating the complexity of LGBTQ counseling in Florida, and I feel it myself as a member of this community.

Lately, I’ve seen a lot of "I stand with the trans community" hashtags. And listen: I appreciate the sentiment. Visibility matters. But in a state where our healthcare, our bathrooms, and even our right to exist in public spaces are being debated on the House floor, hashtags are just the starting line.

If you want to move from a "well-meaning observer" to a true co-conspirator in our survival and joy, you have to get your hands a little dirty. Here are seven concrete, actionable things you can do right now to support the trans community in Florida.

1. Educate Yourself Beyond the "101"

We’ve moved past the phase where knowing what "cisgender" means is enough. Allies need to understand the specific legal landscape we are navigating in 2026.

Do you know what SB 254 actually does? Do you understand how HB 1521 affects where your trans friends can safely stop for a bathroom break on a road trip across the state? You don’t need a law degree, but you do need to understand the barriers. When you know the facts, you can support without the spotlight and avoid asking your trans friends to do the emotional labor of explaining their oppression to you.

2. Fund the Resistance (Directly)

Florida has some of the most resilient grassroots organizations in the country. Because the state government is often hostile to our needs, we have to build our own safety nets.

If you have the means, set up a recurring monthly donation to organizations that are doing the heavy lifting. I’m talking specifically about TransNetwork, the only Trans-run 501(c)(3) in St. Pete.

Money is a tool. Use it to keep the lights on for the people who are keeping us safe.

3. Practice "Aggressive" Inclusive Language (When We Aren't There)

It’s easy to use the right pronouns when you’re sitting across from me in a therapy session. It’s much harder: and much more important: to do it when there isn’t a trans person in the room to "correct" you.

When your uncle misgenders a celebrity or your coworker makes a "joke" about pronouns, speak up. You aren't just being "polite"; you are signaling to everyone in that space that transphobia is not a social currency you accept. This is how you help create the inclusive therapeutic spaces we work so hard to maintain in our practice.

4. Be a "Bathroom Buddy"

With the "Bathroom Bill" (HB 1521) in effect in many public and government buildings, simply going to the restroom has become a high-anxiety task for many trans and gender-expansive Floridians.

If you’re out at a public park, a government building, or an airport with a trans friend, ask: "Do you want me to walk to the restroom with you?" You don't have to make it a big deal. Just being there as a buffer can deter harassment and provide a sense of safety that we often don't have when we are alone. Solidarity isn't performative: it’s about showing up in the small, mundane moments.

5. Vet Your Own Professional Circles

Are you a business owner? A doctor? A manager? Look at your own "house."

  • Does your insurance company cover gender-affirming care?
  • Does your office have all-gender restrooms?
  • If you’re a healthcare provider, do you have the SPARK Initiative Affirming Provider Badge or similar credentials?

Don't wait for a trans person to apply for a job or walk into your clinic to realize your space isn't welcoming. Fix the systems before we get there. If you need a referral for someone who "gets it," we specialize in transgender support and can help point you in the right direction.

6. Show Up for School Board Meetings

The current climate in Florida schools is particularly heavy. From pronoun restrictions to book bans, the target is squarely on our youth.

Most school board meetings are attended by a very vocal, very small minority. When allies show up: even if you don’t have kids in the district: and speak in favor of inclusive policies and protecting trans students, it changes the room. It lets the board know that the "silent majority" actually cares about the safety and dignity of all kids.

7. Take Care of Yourself So You Can Stay in the Fight

This is a marathon, not a sprint. We’ve seen a lot of well-meaning allies burn out because they try to carry the weight of the entire world at once.

We need you for the long haul. That means knowing when to step back, recharge, and recharge your "Pride battery". Therapy isn't just for people in a crisis; it's a tool for anyone trying to navigate a world that feels increasingly chaotic. Whether you are a trans person looking for a safe space or an ally looking to process the secondary trauma of advocacy, we are here for you.

Beyond the Hashtag

Allyship is a verb. It’s a series of choices we make every single day to prioritize the humanity of others over our own comfort. Florida is a beautiful state, and our community is full of neuro-joy and resilience. We aren't going anywhere.

If you're ready to take the next step: whether that's through therapy, community action, or simply learning how to be a better friend: know that you don't have to do it alone.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of this series, where we’ll dive deeper into how to support the trans community in professional and medical settings.
