Have you ever walked into a therapy office and felt like you had to bring a PowerPoint presentation just to explain your life?
Maybe you’ve spent the first three sessions, and a significant chunk of your hard-earned money, explaining what "non-binary" means, why your polyamorous relationship isn't a "symptom" of trauma, or why you’re not looking for a "cure" for your trans identity. It’s exhausting. It’s what we call "Therapy 101," and frankly, if you’re the one doing the teaching, you should be the one getting paid.
At Byrnes Counseling Group, we do things differently. We are a trans-led practice, founded by Tristan Byrnes, and we believe that you shouldn’t have to defend your existence before you start the work of healing.
Today, we are beyond excited to introduce the newest member of our clinical team, Christy Wolf, RMHCI, a therapist who lives and breathes the philosophy of being "Already Understood."
What Does "Already Understood" Actually Mean?
When we talk about the "Already Understood" philosophy, we aren't just using a catchy marketing phrase. It’s a clinical stance. For many in the LGBTQ+, trans, poly, and kink communities, the biggest barrier to mental health care is the fear of being pathologized or misunderstood.
Christy Wolf (she/her) understands this because she lives it. As a trans woman, Christy brings a level of lived experience that you simply cannot get from a textbook. When you sit down with her: whether it’s on a screen for telehealth or in her cozy office in Pinellas Park: there is an immediate baseline of respect.

"Already Understood" means:
- You don’t have to justify your pronouns.
- You don’t have to explain why your gender identity is valid.
- Your relationship structure (polyamory, ENM, etc.) is treated as a valid choice, not a problem to be solved.
- Your kinks or BDSM interests are handled with professionalism and affirmation, not shame.
In Christy’s room, your identity is the foundation, not the obstacle. This allows you to dive straight into the stuff that actually brought you to therapy: the anxiety, the depression, the trauma, or just the general "adulting is hard" vibes of 2026.
Meet Christy Wolf: More Than Just a Bio
Christy is a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern (RMHCI) in Florida, working under the expert supervision of our own Tristan Byrnes. But beyond the letters after her name, Christy is a human being who genuinely "gets it."
She specializes in working with teens and adults who are navigating the complexities of gender identity, sexuality, and trauma. But she’s also a powerhouse when it comes to the "standard" stuff that hits our community hard: like religious trauma, family rejection, and the crushing weight of systemic oppression.
Her Clinical Vibe: Narrative, Collaborative, and Real
Christy isn't the kind of therapist who sits silently with a clipboard, nodding and saying "And how does that make you feel?" for 50 minutes. (We don't really do that here at Byrnes.)
She uses Narrative Therapy as her home base. Narrative therapy is all about the stories we tell about ourselves. Often, the world: families, schools, the news: writes stories for us: "You’re too much," "You’re broken," "You’re the problem." Christy helps you reclaim the pen. She works with you to separate your identity from the problems you're facing, helping you build a new story where you are the protagonist with agency, not just a passive character.
She also blends in practical, evidence-informed tools like:
- CBT & DBT: For when the anxiety is loud and you need actual skills to regulate your nervous system.
- REBT: To challenge those internal "shoulds" that keep us stuck in shame.
- Mindfulness: To help you stay grounded when the world feels like it's spinning out of control. (Check out our post on body-based tools for instant calm for a preview of this kind of work!)

Why a Trans-Led Practice Matters
There is a specific kind of safety that comes from knowing the person at the top of the organization has walked the walk. Tristan Byrnes built this group to be a sanctuary. When we hire therapists like Christy, we aren't just looking for clinical skill; we are looking for cultural humility and community connection.
We know that for many trans and gender-diverse folks, the medical and mental health systems have felt like gatekeepers. You shouldn't have to jump through hoops to prove who you are just to get support. Christy operates from a gatekeeper-free, identity-affirming perspective. You are the expert on your own life. She is just here to help you navigate the map.
All Bodies, All Stories
In line with our commitment to being an affirming space, Christy and the rest of the team at Byrnes Counseling Group practice from a body-neutral and body-positive lens. We know that the intersection of trans identity and body image can be incredibly complex.
Whether you are navigating dysphoria, recovering from diet culture, or just trying to exist in a body without the constant pressure to "fix" it, you will find a safe harbor here. We celebrate the uniqueness of every individual, regardless of size, shape, or ability. You can read more about existing without having to explain yourself here.
Accessibility: Making Therapy Doable
We know that "affirming care" doesn't mean much if you can't afford it. Tristan and the team are committed to making sure money isn't the thing that keeps you from healing.
Christy is currently offering a session rate of $100.
For those who have looked at therapy rates in Florida lately, you know that’s a breath of fresh air. She is also an Open Path provider, further cementing her commitment to accessible care for those who need it most.
Where to Find Her
Christy is currently taking new clients! Whether you prefer the convenience of your own couch or the intentionality of an in-person office, she’s got you covered.
- In-Person: Join her in our welcoming office in Pinellas Park.
- Telehealth: Available for anyone residing in the state of Florida.

Our Pinellas Park location is designed to feel like a home, not a clinic. Think comfortable sofas, inclusive artwork, and plenty of fidget toys for our neurodivergent friends (we see you, and we probably have the same fidget spinner).
Is Christy the Right Fit for You?
Choosing a therapist is a bit like dating: you need to find the right "click." You might vibe with Christy if:
- You’re tired of explaining your queer/trans identity to cis-hetero therapists.
- You want a therapist who understands that "coming out" isn't a one-time event, but a lifelong process.
- You’re navigating polyamory or kink and want to talk about your relationships without being judged.
- You want someone who is warm, professional, and maybe even cracks a joke when things get too heavy.
- You’re looking for someone who sees you as a whole person, not a diagnosis.
If you’ve been feeling like you’re "too much" for traditional therapy, or if you’ve been waiting for a sign to start your journey, this is it.

Take the Next Step
You don't have to carry the weight of being "the teacher" anymore. You can just be the client. You can just be you.
If you’re ready to experience the power of being "already understood," we invite you to reach out. Christy offers free 15-minute consultations to make sure the fit feels right before you dive in.
