Welcome back to the second installment of our Intersectionality & Liberation series. If you missed the first one, don’t worry: we’re just getting started.

At Byrnes Counseling Group, we talk a lot about the "vibe." We’ve worked hard to create a space that feels less like a sterile clinic and more like a place where you can actually take a breath (and maybe steal a piece of candy from the jar). As a trans-led practice, we know firsthand how much of a game-changer it is to sit across from someone who gets it: someone who doesn't need a 20-minute PowerPoint presentation on your identity before the actual therapy starts.

But here’s the thing: while we are fiercely affirming and deeply connected to our community, we also recognize that lived experience is not a monolith. Our "lived experience" as a trans-led team is powerful, but it isn't the only experience. For Black LGBTQ+ individuals in Florida, finding a therapist who understands the specific intersections of race, gender, and sexuality is more than just a preference: it’s a vital part of identity-affirming therapy.

Today, we’re stepping back to shine a spotlight on some incredible Black-led spaces and resources that are doing the heavy lifting of healing in our community.

Why Lived Experience Isn't Just a "Plus"

In the therapy world, we often talk about "cultural competency." It’s a nice term, but it sometimes feels a bit… clinical? Like something you get a certificate for after a three-hour webinar.

Real healing often happens in the "me too" moments. When you’re navigating the world as a Black queer or trans person, you’re dealing with layers of systemic pressure that a "competent" but disconnected therapist might miss. You need someone who understands the weight of code-switching, the specific nuances of family dynamics in the Black community, and the unique joy that comes from liberation.

When we provide trauma informed therapy LGBTQ folks can trust, we have to acknowledge that trauma isn't just about individual events; it’s about the environment we move through every day. That’s why culturally specific care is so transformative. It removes the burden of "explaining" and lets you get straight to the "healing."

Spotlight: Just Be Rooted (Tampa/St. Pete)

If you’re looking for LGBTQ therapy Florida that truly centers Black and marginalized voices, you need to know about Just Be Rooted.

Located right here in the Tampa and St. Pete area, Just Be Rooted is more than just a therapy practice: it’s a mental health collective. They describe themselves as an anti-oppressive, holistic space that serves both youth and adults. What makes them stand out is their "eclectic" approach. They aren't just sitting on a couch nodding; they integrate creative expression and community-building into the therapeutic process.

For many Black LGBTQ+ individuals, traditional talk therapy can feel a bit restrictive. Just Be Rooted offers a space where you can "just be" (pun fully intended). Whether it’s through their clinical work or their community events, they are rooting healing in justice and authenticity. They understand that mental health isn't just about "fixing" the individual; it’s about nurturing the spirit within the context of the community.

Narrative as Healing: Blaque/OUT Magazine

Healing doesn't only happen in a therapist’s office. Sometimes, it happens when you see your story reflected on a page.

Enter Blaque/OUT Magazine. Led by the powerhouse Tamara Leigh in Tampa Bay, this monthly digital magazine is a sanctuary for Black and Brown Queer culture. It features writers, creatives, and influencers who are often sidelined in mainstream LGBTQ+ media.

Why does a magazine matter for mental health? Because visibility is a form of trans joy and resistance. When you read stories that center your existence without making it a "problem" to be solved, it shifts your internal narrative. Blaque/OUT and its sister consulting arm, Equity & Inclusivity Architects, are doing the essential work of making sure Black and Brown queer voices aren't just heard, but are leading the conversation.

The Power of Creative Release

One of the things we love about the work being done at spaces like Just Be Rooted is the emphasis on creativity. Sometimes, words aren't enough to describe the experience of being "othered" or the relief of finding your people.

Artistic self-expression can be a massive part of a trauma informed therapy LGBTQ journey. It allows for an emotional release that doesn't require a perfectly formed sentence. It’s about taking up space, making a mess, and finding the beauty in the process: much like the messy, beautiful work of self-discovery.

Finding Your Best Fit

We know that finding the right therapist can feel a bit like dating, except you have to talk about your childhood and there’s usually less pasta involved. (Though, honestly, we wouldn’t be against therapy-with-pasta.)

The most important thing is that you feel seen. Sometimes that means working with us at Byrnes Counseling Group because our trans-led, neurodivergent-friendly vibe clicks with you. And sometimes, it means seeking out a Black-led collective like Just Be Rooted because that specific lived experience is what your soul is craving right now.

There is no "wrong" way to seek help, as long as the space you’re in respects your humanity, honors your intersectional identity, and doesn't ask you to leave any part of yourself at the door.
